  2. I remembered reading somewhere that Jim Davis was actually in economics before going into cartooning, and that his whole reason for creating Garfield was to capitalize on licensing benefits.

    His whole point was to create the most marketable character ever. He even thought about things like the appeal of animal versus human characters.

    I think I'm going to go wiki all that now.
